Last Night, Destination Imagination honored the Mayo Clinic with its coveted Risorgimento Award at the Global Finals Welcome Ceremony. The Mayo Clinic has been dedicated to serving humanity through hope and healing, including making significant contributions in the fields of medicine and science that have transformed the healthcare industry, for an astounding 150 years.

“We have been honored with awards in magazines and places like that,” said Dr. Doug Wood, Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic. “But let me tell you this one, this is really special because it comes from a group of people like you who are really the embodiment of what we are at the Mayo Clinic. And that’s why we are so deeply touched by this award.”

More than 1,400 teams from all over the world gathered together last night at Thompson-Boling Arena for the Global Finals 2014 Welcome Ceremony, the largest event in Destination Imagination history. The crowd clapped and cheered as the Parade of Nations began, showing pride in their state or nation for their representation at Global Finals. It was certainly a night to remember.

“American Idol” finalist and DI alumna Rachel Hale beautifully performed the national anthem, while David Garibaldi, an urban-contemporary performance artist and finalist on “America’s Got Talent,” showed his imagination and creativity by combining painting and dance to create an Einstein masterpiece.

One of the most exciting moments of the night was a surprise video message from Academy Award winning director James Cameron, who congratulated DI-ers and told them to remember that they are all explorers just like him. “If you use your brain, imagination and curiosity, you can do anything you want to do,” Cameron said.
